All CDL transactions are done at the DMV headquarters in Cranston. You must be at least 21 years old to apply for a Rhode Island CDL. However, you can receive a license valid for intrastate (within state) travel at age 18. You must have had a regular Rhode Island driver’s license for at least two years, with no suspensions or revocations. As of May 21, 2014, all Department of Transportation medical exams must be performed by Certified medical examiners. You must present a valid Medical Card or Certificate to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). Read and understand the Rhode Island CDL Manual before applying for your CDL.
