Illinois’ CDL program has been credited as one of the best in the nation by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The CDL program has been overhauled during my administration to help ensure that truck drivers licensed in Illinois are held to the highest possible standards. In addition to the new cellphone use/texting ban, other recent initiatives include requiring any person applying for a CDL for the first time, or renewing their current CDL, to file a medical certification with the Secretary of State’s office. The law strengthens the CDL program by requiring truckers to meet minimum health and safety standards before getting behind the wheel. For details on medical certification, see pages 132-133.
